How does the Side Scan Sonar (SSS) Rasterization work?

View your SSS files as a raster image

We are excited to announce support for generating high-resolution raster images from raw Side Scan Sonar (SSS) data. This functionality enhances your ability to visualize sonar scans directly within the platform.

View your Side Scan Sonar file as a Raster Image

  • Select your file in the file explorer in the left folder/file tree pane or double-click the file in the right area to open the file inspector.

  • Given the file was fully indexed (see file status in file list to be 'Indexed')

you should see a 'Preview tab', click this tab.

  • When a preview was not yet generated you will see a button to 'Create Preview', click this.

  • Now you will see the different steps taken to create the raster image

  • Wait until this finished (this could take some time, depending on the file size) to watch your SSS file as a raster image.

Intelligent Resource Check

Because rasterization is computationally intensive, the system now pre-calculates the required resources—including storage—before starting the process. If the estimated resources exceed current availability, the rasterization will be skipped automatically, and a notification will appear.

Need more capacity?
If you receive a notification due to insufficient storage or compute capacity, please contact north.io support to request an increase.

This safeguard ensures reliable performance while allowing you to scale on demand.
