Keyboard Navigation in the File Manager

How to use keys

Written by Oliver Schallehn

The platform supports keyboard interactions to improve navigation efficiency and streamline common actions in the File Manager.

The following shortcuts are available:

General Selection

  • ESC
Clears the current selection or multi-selection.

  • SHIFT + Click / Navigation
Selects a range of items between the first and last selected element.

  • CTRL / CMD + A
Selects all items in the current view.

  • SPACE
Selects or deselects the currently focused item.

Navigation

Within File Manager

  • Arrow Up / Arrow Down
Moves the focus to the previous or next item.
If an item is already selected, the list scrolls accordingly.

  • Arrow Up / Arrow Down (no selection)
    Selects the first available row.

  • SHIFT + Arrow Up / Arrow Down
Extends or reduces the current selection by adding or removing items.

Between Interface Areas

  • TAB
Switches focus from the tree view to the File Manager.

  • SHIFT + TAB
Switches focus from the File Manager back to the tree view.

  • TAB (within File Manager)
Moves focus to the table header (e.g. “Select All” checkbox).

Hierarchy Navigation

  • Arrow Left / Backspace
Navigates to the parent folder or higher-level node.

Actions

  • ENTER
Opens the selected item (e.g. folder or file inspector).

  • DELETE (Del / Entf)
Triggers the delete action for the selected item(s).
A confirmation dialog will be shown.

Notes

  • Keyboard navigation depends on the current focus (tree view or file manager).

  • Visual feedback (selection state, focus) indicates the currently active element.

  • Some interactions may vary depending on context (e.g. folder vs. file view).
