Geo-Tagging non-geo Files

Geo-locate files without a geo-reference and display them on a map

Apart from "geo files" there are many files that do not have a spatial origin but can be attributed to a location. This could involve images with geotags, documents and or generic data files such as csv files or excel files (e.g. pdf, docx, jpg, png, movies etc). Some of these files however could have a relevance to location on the map.

With the feature described in this article you could add geotags to a file so it can be brought to a map and found with the GeoSearch.

Add a Geotag

  • Select a file in the file explorer

  • Choose via the context menu or the top button 'Add geotag'

  • The 'New geotag' full screen dialogue appears

  • (Optional) Choose 'Orientation layers'. This allows you to add an existing map with it's layers to the map in the geotag dialogue to assist in setting the correct locations for your non-geo file

  • Select a geometry that should be assigned to the non-geo file as geotag reference

  • Then set a point, draw a line or a polygon (depending on what you have chosen).

  • The node coordinates are displayed in a dialogue in the top right corner

  • If needed you can adjust the values manually or discard the selection

  • Click on 'Next' to specify a name for your geotag and a (optional) description)

  • Click 'Done' to finish the geotag creation

  • The new geotag will appear in the Locations list

  • Repeat the above process in case you like to add the file to other locations, these will be added to the Locations list.

  • When done with the geotagging you can leave the dialogue via click on top-right 'Close' button which takes you back to the file explorer

Note: In case you need to go back to the file explorer while creating a new geotag you can always do so via top left click on the file name which opens the file explorer in a new browser tab.

After having set a geotag this is indicated in the file explorer via an icon:

When a file has at least one geotag you can any time remove or edit this via selecting the file and chosing 'Manage geotag' at top button or via the context menu

After a file has been geotagged

  • it can be added as a layer to the map like any other file with a georeference, and it can be found via the map's geosearch.

  • a new 'Overview' tab is appearing in the file explorer showing the geotagged locations on a map
